Biocultural Landscapes – FPNR
Location: Sierra Occidental de Jalisco, Mexico
Duration: 6 years (2012-2018)
Financial and institutional partners: French Global Environment Facility (FFEM),
Description
Between 2012 and 2018, the Fédération des Parcs was entrusted with a component of a FFEM project to support Mexican stakeholders in the construction of a mechanism for concerted management of the territory around the strengthening of territorial identity and the consolidation of sustainable local production and service chains. The Fédération des Parcs has trained the local team in charge of the project in French consultation tools and the “PNR method” via various missions and delegations. Once this was done, it delegated technical assistance to the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne, so that this collaboration between a French park and the Paisaje Biocultural de Jalisco could continue as a decentralized cooperation project.
This cooperation project has been a resounding success, and has led to a number of advances:
– the creation of a “Paisaje Biocultural” engineering team to serve the territory,
– the creation of a group of Park ambassadors to raise awareness among the local population
– mobilizing local players in the “Paisaje Biocultural” approach
– taking part in discussions and collective action on economic sectors (local products – confectionery, coffee, raicillia alcohol, agave, livestock, etc.), tours, etc.
– drawing up an initial territorial agreement
– strengthening collaboration between different institutional levels
– capitalizing on the pilot project at national level.
Today, the Paysage Bioculturel exists, and cooperates on forest management and tourism with the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc.
The Federation is now working with two other Mexican states to deploy the Biocultural Landscape tool in their territories.
