78th session of United Nation General Assembly: French announcement on HAC

On the 19th of September, the United Nations held the last day of the SDG summit at its headquarters in New-York, during the General Assembly high-level week. The opportunity for the French biodiversity state secretary to announce the French progress on the High Ambition Coalition contribution, and the launch of the related platform.

The United Nations hosted the SDG Summit on September 18 and 19, 2023 at its New York headquarters, during the General Assembly High-Level Week. Being a cornerstone of the UN’s General Assembly Week, the aim of the SDG Summit is to put the world back on track towards a greener, cleaner, safer and fairer future for all. Also, with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at its halfway point, world leaders conducted a comprehensive review of progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing high-level political guidance on taking action towards the 2030 target year.

Taking part in the High-level political event presented by the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC N&P), the Global Ocean Alliance (GOA) and the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature (LPN), France’ Secretary of State for Biodiversity Sarah el Hairy highlighted during the lightening round of action announcements, France’s commitment to the target 3 of the GBF and its current contribution to the coalition. As co-chair of the HAC N&P, France is helping to make this initiative operational, by setting up a French working group dedicated to the HAC N&P.

I believe that today we must collectively succeed, and give the HAC N&P the means to move to the next level. (…) We’ve all celebrated the HAC’s first successes together, but now we need concrete action on the ground, for the whole world and for nature conservation” – Sarah El Hairy.

Through the launch of a dedicated platform, the French Hub for Protected Areas and People, in charge of facilitating the French working group, will help identify and list expertise in the field of protected areas, and will contribute directly to the platforms currently being developed by the HAC secretariat.
